“Has it been smoked in” is my first question to any a d that doesn’t explicitly state never smoked in. Seemingly nice cars that take a long time to sell I usually chalk up to someone chain smoking in their car.

I too ask the same before bothering to go see a car. I’ve had so many replies that just mean “yes”

A friend of mine bought a van that had been smoked in. He had to strip the interior to get rid of the smell. After he pulled everything but the headliner, he decided to power wash the inside to get rid of the funk on the floor and walls. He accidentally hit the headliner with the power washer and he said dark yellow liquid started running down the inside of the van. I think that’s when he realized the headliner is part of the interior and would need to go too.

yeah, cigarette smoke can leave a greasy yellow layer on the cars interior , as seen in many r/justrolledintotheshop posts.

My dad keeps his vehicles immaculately clean, despite chain smoking in them for decades. Of course they still smell like ass . He was a year short of smoking for 60 years before he finally got emphysema. I'm actually surprised that he quit after the diagnosis.

I smoked cigars in my Golf for as long as I had it. Probably one of the reasons that the headliner finally fell down. I put it back up with a staple gun.

The headliner is the worst for the nicotine stains. I had to do a lot of scrubbing when I bought my car, but baking soda didn’t do enough. I had to go out and buy and ionizer, which works wonders.

Cigarette smoke goes up, so the carpet isn’t where the most smoke will be.

If any Atlanta Oppos want to borrow an ionizer, hit me up.

I was buying a used car and was kind of locked in on this one vehicle (we were in another country) that had been smoked in . Then they did some sort of ozone cleaning to it and it smelled like a new car. I was amazed ‘cause my wife who usually complains about the smell of everything was completely satisfied.

When we bought my wife’s Sorento, we went to look at a used one that fit the bill about an hour away. Talked to the salesman the day before, looked good in pictures, but I never asked the question.

He pulls it around and I notice the window vent shields and it hits me. Now I’m worried that we’ve wasted our morning and I open the door - lo and behold, nasty smoke smell. Ugh. The salesman swears they’ll get it out and I’m like, “nope, the first hot summer day and it’ll reek in there again.”

Besides, if an ozone machine could get it out that easily, they’d have already done it. I’ll never buy a car that has been smoked in.

There was one a couple of years ago near me that was a very nice 4x4 2500 Suburban that was priced much higher than the market for them here . The final picture was a beer bottle held up to block the plate just like this one. Had to have been a “Honey it’s been for sale for two months... nobody wants these things.” Cracked me up though.

I had a similar experience with a used Enclave , except it wasn’t smoke, it was puke. Someone lost their lunch in the back. It looked clean, so I assume the puke went down into the cracks and crevices. When we arrived, it was ready to go for a test drive with the a/c blasting since it was a hot day and the salesman “ wanted to make sure it was nice and cool for the drive.” I discovered the problem after we got back and shut it down. We stepped outside to talk and 15 minutes later my wife asked a question about the rear folding seat. So, I popped the rear hatch and was hit with a wall of stench.

Hard pass.

That’s probably how I’d answer the question if I was asked , as I have no idea what previous owners have done, even if I’ve owned the car for 10 years and never smelled it. Probably why I’m usually unsuccessful at selling things on craigslist.

2.2L Non turbo, 2.5L non turbo, the Shelby CSX had a turbo 4 cylinder, and there was a 3.0L V6 option too.

Oh man, I worked at a repair shop in my youth and that was the rental\shop car. Dodge shadow in that color with an auto. The most hateful car i’ve ever driven. When you’re a kid, any car can be fun. Any car except a green dodge shadow, because it sucks too much to be fun.

I had a customer come in with a brown interior and tinted windows. I got a spot of grease on the seat near the adjuster. I found out the interior was cream colored originally. The windows were nearly black with residue.
